,1,During remarks in Tehran on Monday, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani blamed the U.S. for the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Iranian-backed, Gaza-situated Hamas militants.
"The American government must be held accountable for the crimes of the Zionist regime, and it is the American government that is now supporting the Zionist regime against the oppressed nation of Palestine,” Kanaani said.
The accusation came after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a heavier military presence in the Middle East on Sunday, in wake of the Hamas attacks on Israel on Oct. 7. According to Blinken, the U.S. aircraft carriers being sent to the Mediterranean sea are intended to be a deterrence as opposed to a provocation of war.
Asked if Tehran would engage if the U.S. weighed in, Kanaani said that "Iran considers that the U.S. is already militarily involved in the conflict between Israel and Palestinians."

,1,On Sunday, rocks plucked from the asteroid 101955 Bennu will land on our planet, ready to be studied by scientists who hope this sample can shine a light on our planet – and how it came to be.
The sample comes to us seven years after NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla. on a mission to study a near-Earth asteroid and three years after it successfully touched down on Bennu to collect a sample of an asteroid for the first time in the space agency’s history.
Bennu is described as a celestial “rubbish pile” that is made up of material dating back billions of years to when the solar system was forming. And as Alyssa Julie reports, scientists believe its rocks could hold a record of that time period.

The summit was called with the goal that only leaders who came with concrete actions would get to address their peers, meaning the U.S., U.K., France, Russia, India and China were all unable to do so and in turn, their heads of state skipped it.

,1,Alongside his wife, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, U.S. President Joe Biden honoured troops at the annual White House military barbecue on Tuesday, commemorating the Fourth of July — or Independence Day.
Before introducing her husband, Dr. Biden addressed the U.S. Armed Forced and its dedicated soldiers directly, commending them for their consistent sacrifices. “We are so grateful for all you do,” she said.
Each year, soldiers, military officials and their families are invited to the White House for an annual Independence Day barbecue.
After echoing his wife's sentiments, President Biden went on to remind the nation that democracy in the U.S. is “never guaranteed,” urging citizens to “re-dedicate” themselves to ensuring it stays.
“Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We haven’t always lived up to those words, but we’ve never walked away from them. And today, and all days, we have to say clearly, ‘We never will,’” the Democratic Leader said.

,1,Heavily armed Russian mercenaries who advanced most of the way to Moscow began turning back on Saturday, de-escalating a major challenge to President Vladimir Putin's grip on power, in a move their leader said would avoid bloodshed but, analysts said, left Putin looking diminished.
"I think Putin emerges from this significantly weakened," Brian Taylor, professor of Russian studies at Syracuse University, said. "I think if you're a member of the Russian elite, or, in fact, a member of the Russian population, you're going to look at this and think, 'Wow, a private army just drove on Moscow for most of the day. No one stopped them and they're allowed to leave and no real consequences.'"
Plus, an expert on Russia from King's College in London said on Saturday that it's too early for Putin to remove Yevgeny Prigozhin as the head of his Wagner Private Military Company (PMC).
Speaking from the German city of Munich, Marina Miron, from King's College Defence Studies Department, said Putin was likely to come out fairly unscathed from Saturday's rapid advance on Moscow by the Wagner group fighters, who have since returned to their base.
A deal brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko enabled Prigozhin to move to Belarus in return for his and the fighters' safety, thus avoiding bloodshed.

,1,The U.S. Coast Guard says a debris field found by searchers near the Titanic shipwreck on Thursday is wreckage from the missing Titan submersible and that it was consistent with a "catastrophic implosion" of the vessel.
OceanGate said in its own statement the five crew members onboard “have sadly been lost.”
"There doesn't appear to be any connection between the noises and the location on the seafloor. Again, this was a catastrophic implosion of the vessel, which would have generated a significant broadband sound down there that the sonobuoys have picked up," Capt. Jamie Frederick told a news conference on Thursday.
A search will continue at the site of the debris field to gather information on how and when the implosion of the pressure chamber occurred, and the prospect of recovering the crew.
Five people were onboard Titan: a British billionaire adventurer, a wealthy Pakistani businessman and his son, a French explorer and the CEO of OceanGate.

,1,A NASA panel formed last year to study "unidentified aerial phenomena," commonly referred to as UFOs, held its first public meeting Wednesday ahead of hotly-anticipated report scheduled to be released in the coming weeks.
The 16-member body, which includes experts from fields ranging from physics to astrobiology, was tasked with examining unclassified UFO sightings and other data collected from government and commercial sectors.
David Spergel, chair of NASA’s panel on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), said Wednesday that stigma around the reporting of UAP has made the collection of data on the topic difficult. He said data collection is also “unsystematic and fragmented” across many agencies and that reported UAP sightings are often “uninformative” due to lack of quality control and data curation.
The panel represents the first such inquiry conducted by the U.S. space agency on a subject the government previously relegated to the secretive purview of military and national security officials.

,1,Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan departed the Lahore high court that had granted him bail in several cases against him on Friday, surrounded by a crowd of chanting supporters.
Earlier this week, Khan’s home had been the scene of pitched battles between security forces, which used water cannons and tear gas against petrol-bomb-hurling supporters trying to stop them.
The legal proceedings against the former cricket star began after he was ousted from office in a parliamentary vote early last year.
The Pakistan high court cancelled an arrest warrant for Khan, defusing a volatile stand-off between his supporters and security forces that had escalated into clashes earlier this week.
Khan had been facing charges that he unlawfully sold state gifts given to him by foreign dignitaries when he was prime minister from 2018 to 2022.

,1,Pakistan's security forces withdrew from around Imran Khan's home on Wednesday, putting a pause on clashes that had erupted after police tried to arrest the former prime minister.
Earlier, security forces had fired tear gas and water cannons at hundreds of Khan's supporters who had cordoned off his home in an effort to prevent his arrest.
Khan's sought-after arrest is from a warrant against him for defying orders to present himself in court over charges that he unlawfully sold state gifts given to him by foreign dignitaries during his time as prime minister.

,1,The World Health Organization (WHO) is still working to identify the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, its director general said on Friday, after a report from the United States alleged that the pandemic had most likely been caused by a Chinese laboratory leak.
"I have written to and spoken with high-level Chinese leaders on multiple occasions as recently as just a few weeks ago. Until then, all hypotheses on the origins of the virus remain on the table," said WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that the U.S. Energy Department had concluded the pandemic likely arose from a Chinese laboratory leak, an allegation which Beijing denies.
"I wish to be very clear that WHO has not abandoned any plans to identify the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic," Tedros said.

,1,United States Air Force Brigadier Gen. Pat Ryder confirmed on Friday that U.S. President Joe Biden ordered fighter aircraft assigned to United States Northern Command (NORCOM) to engage and destroy a "high-altitude airborne object" in United States airspace over Alaska on Friday afternoon.
Ryder said North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) detected the object on ground radar on Feb. 9. They then identified the object using fighter aircraft. Flying at 40,000 feet, it represented a risk to civilian passenger flights, according to United States Department of Defense (DoD) officials.
U.S. President Joe Biden gave the order to shoot down the object “out of an abundance of caution” according to the White House.
An F-22 tactical fighter aircraft out of Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Alaska shot down the "object" with an AIM 9X missile, the Pentagon confirmed.
The incident came a week after U.S. and Canadian officials first confirmed a Chinese surveillance balloon had flown over Canada and across the continental U.S. over the course of several days. The balloon was ultimately shot down over the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday.

,1,U.S. President Joe Biden told reporters on Saturday afternoon that he had given the order to officials to shoot down the suspected Chinese spy balloon earlier this week and that the military successfully "took it down" earlier in the day.
He said that national security leaders had decided the best time for the operation was when it got over water, where fighter jets shot it down off the Carolina coast after it had travelled over sensitive military sites across North America.
According to Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin in a statement, due to the size and weight of the balloon, the military had determined that taking it down over land would pose an undue risk to people on the ground.

,1,Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro ended his post-election silence on Friday, addressing his supporters at the gates of the presidential residence after staying silent for almost 40 days after his election loss.
Some of his supporters have called for a military coup to stop President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from taking office. Bolsonaro was ambiguous in his comments and did not endorse their call for a military intervention, but said the Armed Forces would respect the Constitution.
"The Armed Forces are united," he said. "They owe loyalty to our people and respect to the Constitution, and they are responsible for our freedom."
Lula's victory over Bolsonaro will be certiifed by Brazil's national electoral authority on Monday.

,1,Leftist Luis Inacio Lula da Silva defeated President Jair Bolsonaro on Sunday in an election runoff that marked a stunning comeback for Lula and the end of Brazil’s most right-wing government in decades.
Lula won 50.9 per cent of votes compared with 49.1 per cent for Bolsonaro, the Supreme Electoral Court said, declaring former president Lula the winner. The 77-year-old Lula’s inauguration is scheduled for Jan. 1.
The vote was a rebuke for the fiery far-right populism of Bolsonaro, who emerged from the back benches of Congress to forge a novel conservative coalition but lost support as Brazil ran up one of the worst death tolls of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As Mike Armstrong reports, the election was very tense and served as a referendum on two very different versions of Brazil’s future.

,1,Two men suspected of being Chinese intelligence officers have been charged with attempting to obstruct a U.S. criminal investigation and prosecution of Chinese tech giant Huawei, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Monday.
The two men, Guochun He and Zheng Wang, are accused of trying to direct a person with the U.S. government whom they believed was a cooperator to provide confidential information about the Justice Department’s investigation, including about witnesses, trial evidence and potential new charges. One of the defendants paid about $61,000 for the information, the Justice Department alleged.
Garland was joined by FBI Director Chris Wray and other law enforcement during the press conference on the national security matter.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sparred with Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre in question period on Thursday in the House of Commons, over the use of a misogynistic tag in several of the Conservative Leader’s YouTube videos.
A Global News analysis of 50 of Poilievre’s most recent YouTube videos showed that they included a tag – hidden from viewers – used by a misogynistic online movement that Canada’s intelligence agencies view as a danger.
The tag helps promote Poilievre’s videos among those circles, and signals to YouTube what users might be interested in the Conservative leader’s messaging.
The tag is an acronym for “Men Going Their Own Way” – a mostly online movement comprised of anti-feminists who attempt to cut women out of their lives.

,1,Taiwan’s army staged live-fire exercises in the far-southern Pingtung County on Tuesday night as part of a series of military exercises. Flares lit up targets on a mountain side base while tanks and cannons fired in almost complete darkness.
Apache attack helicopters, Ching-kuo Indigenous Defence Fighters, artillery and drones were expected to have been featured in the drills in Pingtung, according to Reuters. Although the drills were part of a regular round of exercises that happen annually, this year’s focus was on the threat Taiwan is facing from its neighbour China.
“Although Communist China has recently incessantly made moves towards us, trying to incite disputes, we will still carry on with exercises in the spirit of preparing for war without seeking war,” said Huang Jingfeng, a commanding battalion officer leading the exercise. “We will make sure that everyone can have a safe and happy Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.”
China has noticeably increased military activities in the region following the immediate aftermath of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taipei last month, angered by what it saw as a strong show of U.S. support for the island Beijing claims as its own territory.

,1,Tensions keep rising in Asia as China conducts its largest military drills yet around Taiwan.
China's military has called the operation a "deterrent to collusion" between the U.S. and Taiwan, seemingly in response to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the small nation that China regards as its own.
The drills were conducted in six areas surrounding Taiwan, three of which overlap the island's territorial waters, and are much closer than during a similar flare-up in the mid-1990s.
Global’s Redmond Shannon reports on the escalation, including a slew of new ballistic missile launches.

,1,White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday that the earlier announcement by the Department of Health and Human Services (HSS) declaring monkeypox a public health emergency would help accelerate vaccine production and distribution.
Asked if President Joe Biden's administration has acted with enough urgency, Jean-Pierre said the declaration also includes a new dosing strategy that has the potential to increase the number of doses "five-fold."
Having infected more than 6,600 Americans already, Jean-Pierre said the dynamic of the virus has changed and is spreading more "rapidly" than before.
The HSS declaration and subsequent press briefing came as clinics in major cities such as New York and San Francisco reported that they haven’t received enough of the two-shot vaccine to meet demand, and some have had to stop offering the second dose to ensure supply of first doses.
