,1,Iranians will return to the polls for a run-off presidential vote on July 5, after none of the candidates scored a majority in the first round.
The election is to replace president Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash last month.
Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian holds a slim lead over conservative Saeed Jalili. Turnout sank to a record low of only 40 percent.
But with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei holding ultimate authority, even if Pezeshkian were to triumph in the second round, many experts say his ability to bring in real reforms would be severely limited.

But what is the UNRWA?
The UN agency provides education, healthcare and welfare support to people in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. It was specifically set up in 1949 to help Palestinian refugees displaced. For years, Israel has accused the UNRWA of failing to fully distance itself from designated terrorist groups such as Hamas. The suspension of funding by the top sources – the US, Germany and the EU - comes at the worst time. The UN’s agency is warning of an ‘unprecedented’ humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In a video of the stunt, two women can be seen splashing orange-colored soup on the artwork while one of them shouts: "What's more important — art or the right to healthy, sustainable food? Our agricultural system is sick. Our farmers are dying at work."
A spokesperson from the Louvre confirmed to DW that the painting, which is encased in bullet-proof glass, had not been damaged.
They added that the room housing the "Mona Lisa" had been reopened and everything at the museum had returned to normal.
The activists were from the French organization "Riposte Alimentaire" (Food Response), which issued a statement saying the protest aimed to highlight the need to protect the environment and sources of food.
The group called for a system to be put in place that gives people better access to healthy food while providing farmers with a decent income.
It comes as French farmers stage protests demanding better pay, simplified regulations, and protection against cheap imports. For days, angry farmers have been blocking roads with their tractors across the country, and some have pledged to converge on Paris on Monday.
New Prime Minister Gabriel Attal promised "decisions" would be made in the coming weeks to address farmers' concerns.

According to the TASS state news agency, there were also six Russian crew members and three escorts on board the Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft. It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, which occurred around 11 a.m. Moscow time (0800 UTC). It was also not known if anyone survived the crash. A special military commission was on the way to the crash site near the border with Ukraine, the ministry said.
There was no immediate official reaction from Ukraine. Ukrainian media, however, cited military sources as saying that Ukrainian forces downed the plane and that it was transporting missiles. The Kremlin said in response to a reporter's question that it was looking into the situation. The Belgorod region has come under frequent attack from Ukraine in recent months.

,1,India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Ram on the site of a mosque in Ayodhya. His Hindu-nationalist BJP party has been hyping up the event ahead of the elections.
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off a consecration ceremony on Monday for the Ram temple and unveiled a black statue of the Hindu god in the city of Ayodhya, which is believed to be Ram's birthplace. Modi led the opening ceremony dressed in a traditional kurta tunic, as Hindu priests chanted hymns inside the temple's inner sanctum.
Modi's Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set up lavish celebrations across much of the country marking the inauguration.
The temple is being built on land where a mosque had stood for centuries before being torn down by Hindu nationalists in the 1992, sparking violent protests.
The prime minister has argued that the event is a bid for reconciliation.
"The Lord has made me an instrument to represent all the people of India," Modi said earlier in January. In a speech after the ceremony, Modi said the temple opening "marks the dawn of a new era."
The construction of the grand Ram temple cost around €200 million (roughly $217 million). The temple's trust said the construction was funded mostly by private donations.
The opening is significant for India and for the BJP as it's emblematic of the increasing influence of Hindu-nationalist politics under Modi's government.
Ahead of the opening of the temple, thousands of Hindu devotees danced in packed streets on Sunday in Ayodhya as blaring loudspeakers played hymns and religious songs. Millions of Indians watched the ceremony on television, with news channels running non-stop coverage of the event.
Some 80 chartered flights have landed at the new international airport in Ayodhya for the partial opening of the temple.
The ceremony was viewed by nearly 7,500 people — including many prominent politicians, sports and Bollywood celebrities — on a giant screen installed outside the temple as flower petals were showered by a military helicopter.
“It is a matter of great privilege to be part of this divine programme," Modi wrote on X as he participated in the ceremony. The temple, which is still under construction, will be opened to the public after the ceremony is over. Authorities estimate that some 100,000 devotees will visit the Ram temple daily.
The 50-meter high temple has been built on the land where a mosque stood for centuries before it was demolished in 1992 by Hindu groups. Hindus meanwhile claim that the Babri mosque was in turn built over Lord Ram's birthplace by a 16th-century Muslim emperor. A team from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) excavated the site in 2019 and reported evidence of a temple having existed there prior to the mosque.
The demolition of the Babri mosque triggered communal riots that claimed more than 2,000 lives — most of them Muslims. A protracted legal battle about the ownership of the land followed the mosque's demolition. It was resolved in 2019 when the Supreme Court gave the disputed land to the Hindus. Muslims were given a plot outside the city to build a mosque.

,1,The war between Israel and Hamas is entering its 100th day. The fighting erupted after Hamas launched a terrorist attack on October 7th and Israel responded with airstrikes and a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip. Since then, the toll has been devasting. Around 1,200 people – including 520 soldiers – have been killed on the Israeli side, most of them on the first day, making October 7th the deadliest day since the founding of the Jewish state. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says almost 24,000 Palestinians have been killed – that is one percent of the population. The Israeli military says more than 7,000 of the dead are militants. The UN says at least 300 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank. Israel's military campaign has damaged or destroyed around half of Gaza's building and displaced almost 2 million people. DW reporter Mohamed Al-Kalhout visited a refugee camp in the southern city of Rafah to learn more about the difficult conditions displaced people face there.

,1,After the first two days of hearings at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Israel continues to defend its military operation in Gaza as an act of self-defense in response to the October 7th Hamas terror attacks.
A South African delegation argued that Israel's offensive was going beyond that. To them, it is an attempt to destroy the Palestinians as a people - claims that amount to genocide. Now the German federal government says it will request to join the case as a third party - in support of Israel. Berlin says there is 'no basis' for South Africa's accusations.

Blinken is meeting Israeli leaders on Tuesday, as he aims to prevent the conflict in Gaza from spilling over to the rest of the region during his fourth Middle East tour since the war began.
Meanwhile, an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon has reportedly killed a senior commander of the Hezbollah militant group. Hezbollah issued a statement confirming that Wissam Hassan al-Tawil was killed in a strike on Monday, but provided no further details. Lebanese security sources said he was a member of Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force and that he died in an attack on a vehicle in the southern village of Khirbet Selm, near the border with Israel.
