India's new parliament, the Lok Sabha, convened on June 24 for its first session after a mammoth general election that lasted seven weeks. PM Narendra Modi, who has been in power since 2014, the election with his Hindu nationalist BJP lost the absolute majority. The BJP remains the strongest force, but Modi is in his third term of office, scheduled to last five years partners.

Police fired water cannon and tear gas in an attempt to disperse demonstrators who had gathered outside parliament. Protesters hurled firecrackers and erected barricades in a tense stand-off. The demonstrators oppose the government's suspension of talks on joining the European Union until 2028. The pro-Russian prime minister says Georgia will still seek membership, but on its own terms.

In its statement, the court said it had "reasonable grounds" to believe that Netanyahu and Gallant oversaw attacks on the civilian population in Gaza, and that they were also alleged to have used starvation as an instrument of war. It said that Israel's acceptance of the court's jurisdiction was not required. Israel is not a member of the court, seated in The Hague in the Netherlands.
