Henry Hassell asked Sunak, ‘Why do you hate young people so much?’ after the prime minister announced a plan to enforce mandatory national service if the Conservatives are elected in July. Sunak responded with ‘You’ll have a choice’ and ‘You’ll love it!’ when Hassell said he has already spent his life volunteering. The plans will force every 18-year-old in the country to spend time in a competitive, full-time military commission, or one weekend a month volunteering in ‘civil resilience’.

The ceasefire began at 0200 GMT – 4am in Lebanon – after the heaviest day of raids on Beirut, including a series of strikes in the city’s centre, since Israel stepped up its air campaign in Lebanon in late September before sending in ground troops.
By 7am there were no immediate reports of alleged violations of the truce. Some celebratory gunshots could be heard in parts of Beirut’s southern suburbs
