Blind Daniel Lahaina Fire Survivor
Next time you think you are having a bad day, just remember this story you about to hear....
Imagine losing everything — first your vision, along with it your livelihood, you don't even have the memory of how it all happened and then your home goes up in flames. This is Daniel’s reality. A survivor of the tragic Lahaina fire that claimed countless homes, including his at the Front Street Apartments. Daniel’s life was also forever changed when he awoke in a hospital to discover that both his eyes had been forcibly removed in what we think was a hostile involuntary organ harvest.
Can you even imagine someone taking both of your eyes? It's one thing to be born blind with a lifetime of training to cope with the disability. Losing it suddenly with no blind skills at the age of 40 while traveling 4600 miles from your home is unimaginable. Daniel is blind (he literally does not have any eyeballs) and is battling unimaginable pain, and now faces the terrifying possibility of losing his temporary FEMA housing in February and facing the world homeless.
Daniel’s life is a testament to resilience. Before his blindness, he was a skilled artist and craftsman, celebrated for his wood carvings, surfboard shaping, photography, and poetry. He lived life with passion, scaling coconut palms as a sought-after arborist and weaving intricate designs that brought joy to those around him. But now, his world has turned completely dark—physically and emotionally.
Despite this unimaginable hardship, Daniel refuses to give up. He’s taught himself how to navigate everyday life without sight, from cooking and cleaning to tending a small herb garden. With unyielding determination, he is working on creating a new path forward by weaving beautiful lampshades, hats, rugs, and even palm roses as a way to rebuild his life and inspire others.
However, his challenges are overwhelming. The Lahaina fire left him with nothing but ashes. His temporary FEMA housing offers a fragile sense of stability, but it is set to expire in just a few months. Without financial support, Daniel risks becoming homeless while still adjusting to his new reality of blindness.
Daniel is not asking for pity; he is asking for a chance to survive. He dreams of a future where he can not only sustain himself but also support other blind individuals who feel lost in their darkness. He even wants to send handcrafted items to anyone who donates—a small token of gratitude from a man who still finds ways to give, even when he has so little. Dear Maui Planning Commission Members,
I write to oppose the proposed short-term rental ban and request that you recommend its rejection. The detrimental impact of this bill is clear and unsupported by evidence of meaningful benefit. Please consider the following:
1. **Economic Devastation**: An independent study by Kloninger & Sims estimates a $1.3 billion hit to Maui's economy, with the loss of 7,800 jobs and significant tax revenue reductions. An earlier study by economist Paul Brewbaker also highlighted severe economic consequences, including the loss of 14,126 jobs and $137 million in annual tax revenue.
2. **Legal and Reputational Risks**: The bill would likely lead to prolonged litigation against Maui County, harm Maui's reputation, and discourage tourism, all while negatively impacting residents.
3. **Inappropriate for Affordable Housing**: Short-term rental properties, such as those in condominium communities, are unsuitable for affordable housing due to high association dues, special assessments, and maintenance costs. For example, annual dues at Kapalua Ridge Villas range from $19,148 to $30,264, making them impractical for affordable housing.
4. **No Planning Benefit**: Established resort areas that contribute significantly to local taxes and have not converted local housing to short-term rentals should not be included in this ban. These areas, compliant and professionally managed for nearly 50 years, support many local jobs and businesses.
5. **Local Economic Support**: Our vacation rental owners support hundreds of local workers and businesses, from property management and maintenance to local artists and restaurants. The proposed bill threatens these jobs and the economic welfare of our community.
For these reasons, we urge you to recommend rejecting the bill and ensure no short-term rental ban is applied to resort communities which play a critical role in supporting West Maui’s economy.

,1,Out of control wildfires consumed homes in the central Valparaiso region of Chile on Friday (February 2) night, burning through thousands of hectares.
According to Chile's national forestry body CONAF, some 7,000 hectares in Valparaiso alone have been burned. Throughout the country there were at least 158 reported wildfires as of Friday evening.
High temperatures and strong winds have been blamed for fanning the wildfires, with firefighters facing down massive flames as they tried to keep blazes away from homes.
According to local media, preliminary reports claim about 1,000 homes have been damaged. At least ten people have died in forest fires in Chile, AFP reported early on Saturday (February 3), citing officials.

,1,Firefighters were seen trying to put out black smoke which rose from the charred Japan Airlines (JAL) aircraft on Friday (January 5) as crews at Tokyo's Haneda Airport began clearing the wreckage from a runway.
The Japan Airlines (JAL) 9201. A passenger jet collided with a Coast Guard turboprop on the runway while landing in Tokyo on Tuesday. All 379 people on the JAL aircraft escaped before it was engulfed in flames, but five of the six crew on the Coast Guard craft died.
Two excavators equipped with cutting equipment ripped off the Airbus AIR. PA A350's wing, while another lifted debris from inside the burnt-out cabin into a large lorry as around a dozen personnel in white overalls and hard hats watched on.

And Jenny Cane from UKAEA, an expert in fusion engineering, demonstrates the importance of integrated design and materials research in fusion energy development.

Jenny Cane is the Technical Lead for the STEP In-Vessel Components, responsible for the design and performance of the systems that lay closest to the plasma – the Blanket, First Wall, Divertor, Shielding, Limiters and Vacuum-Vessel. After graduating from a DPhil in the Aerodynamics and Heat Transfer of Ramjet Engines at Oxford University Jenny decided to move into renewable energy engineering and spent 7 years at the Wind Turbine manufacturer – Vestas, working as a control; project; and aerodynamics engineer both in the UK and the USA. Jenny began working as an thermo-hydraulics engineer at UKAEA in 2013 working on the JET safety case. She then moved into a lead engineer role for JET as it prepared for the record breaking deuterium-tritium campaigns; before moving to the STEP programme in 2019. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, has two children and enjoys, running, cycling, tap dancing and gardening in her spare time.
Mark Maslin FRGS, FRSA is a Professor of Earth System Science at UCL and the Natural History Museum of Denmark. He is also Strategy Advisor to Lansons, Net Zero Now, a CSR Board member of Sopra Steria and a member of the Climate Crisis Advisory Group. He is a leading scientist with particular interest in understanding climate change and the major challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. He has published over 190 papers in journals such as Science, Nature, and The Lancet. He has received research, consultancy and training funding worth over £75m from government, charities, NGOs and the private sector. He was the only climatologist on the original 2009 The Lancet report on climate change and global health and is a co-author on the annual Lancet Countdown reports that started in 2015. Mark has written 10 books and 100 popular articles (e.g., New Scientist, Independent, Guardian, Telegraph, New York Times and The Conversation on which he currently has over 5.5 million reads). He regularly appears on radio and television, including BBC One David Attenborough’s ‘Climate Change: the facts’. His books include ‘Climate Change: A Very Short Introduction - 4th edition’ (2021), ‘The Cradle of Humanity’ (2019), ‘The Human Planet’ with Simon Lewis (2018) and his latest book is ‘How to Save Our Planet: the Facts’ (2021). Mark was recently named the Number 1 Global Sustainability thought leader and influencer of 2023.
Tim Bestwick is Chief Development Officer and Deputy CEO at the UK Atomic Energy Authority. Tim joined UKAEA in 2018 after leading commercialisation and innovation from big science programmes and campus development at Harwell and Daresbury. Following a career in corporate research in electronic devices and optoelectronics - including IBM and Sharp - Tim has been involved in establishing and growing multiple technology start-up companies. He was Chair of the Eureka Network, the major international business to business innovation network and is Chair of the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus. Tim was awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List in 2023 for services to the commercialisation of science, technology, and innovation.
